Keeping Your Gums Healthy
After receiving periodontal treatment, it is important that you continue to see a dental hygienist for regular dental cleanings. These cleanings, called periodontal maintenance cleanings, will usually be done three to four times a year instead of the usual twice a year dental cleanings. As a periodontal patient, it is important that you come more often so that we can measure your pocket depths and make sure they are decreasing. We will also be sure to clean out those hard to reach areas both above and below the gum line that can harbor disease-causing bacteria and activate a resurgence of infection.
Periodontal maintenance is important to ensure that we can help you keep all of your teeth and bone. Losing your teeth and bone density has been shown to drastically decrease your health and quality of life. When you lose your teeth, adjacent teeth will start to drift and collapse into the open spaces. This shifting can cause those teeth to break and also compromise your once functioning bite. You may take on a “sunken” appearance and start to have trouble eating the foods you once enjoyed.
Periodontal disease can be treated and controlled. You do not have to lose your teeth to gum disease. Come see Dr. Singh and take control of your oral health today!
